There are some new
twists to the way QB 2007 shares data bases, so
this
free guide to installing QB 2007 from CPA911 is very useful.

Intuit's PowerPoint Presentation - While the
examples used are from QB 2005, they are general enough in nature to apply to
most versions of QB.
Intuit's Official Training Guides:
Training & Resources For QuickBooks Advisors:
Online Discussion Groups
There are several QuickBooks advisors and
users who share problems, questions & advice on some free online discussion
groups. The ones I have found most useful are:
IntuitAdvisor
- This was originally supposed to be just for us
professional QuickBooks advisors; but I have noticed a lot of lay people
participating on it.
Data Transfer Utilities
Between QuickBooks Files
Moving data between QuickBooks company files
can be a pain in the butt. Intuit should have built a utility to do this
into the program; but a private individual stepped up to fill in the gap.
A few months ago, I bought the
QuickBooks Transaction Import file Creator from
Big Red Consulting and have used
it a number of times. It works through Excel. You use
QuickBooks' built in feature to produce a journal report for the accounts you
want to transfer in Excel format (XLS). The Big Red utility then converts
the XLS file to the standard IIF format that can be imported into
QuickBooks.
Another useful set of utilities to allow
transfers between
QuickBooks files and to
combine data from
several different QuickBooks files into one have been developed by a CPA in
Texas, Karl E. Irvin, based on Microsoft Access. The Transfer program only works with QuickBooks 2002,
2003
and 2004, while the Combiner program works with any version of QuickBooks
through 2003 and
can even combine data from different versions. You can download demo
versions of each program from
Karl's website and test them before you decide whether or not to pay the
fee
to buy the full power versions.
From
PeachTree to QuickBooks
Using
Google,
I found
this company that, for $400, claims that they can convert data from any
version of PeachTree to any version of QuickBooks. I have no first-hand
knowledge of how they do; but if saving previous detailed transactions is
critical when moving to QB, this would save a lot of data entry time.
Converting QuickBooks For Windows Data Files To QuickBooks For Mac
If you are moving from a Windows based computer
to a Mac, it would be shame to have to re-enter QB data. Intuit will do
the conversion work for you for $99 or $250 (for rush work), or you can
download the utility program and do the conversion yourself. I haven't
used this myself; so make sure you have a good backup copy of your original Mac
file before attempting this conversion.
Password Recovery
It's very frustrating to forget your
password. Intuit had a service that, for $65, would strip out the password
and return the file to you. They recently started a
free password removal service for QB versions through 2005, where you upload
the data file to them and provide your registration license number. I
haven't used this and have no idea how long it takes for them to remove the
password.
A much faster and handier tool,
which I have used several times, is the program from
LostPassword.com that
allows you to discover what the password is. It was only $45 the last time
I checked. They also have password recovery tools for hundreds of other
programs.
